Internal Family Systems
Watching the moon
at midnight,
solitary, mid-sky,
I knew myself completely,
no part left out.

Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a transformative model of psychotherapy that centers on the innate presence of Self—an enduring, compassionate, and wise core within each of us. While IFS acknowledges that the mind is naturally composed of different “parts,” each carrying its own thoughts, feelings, and roles, what makes this approach radical is its understanding that healing emerges not by managing or eliminating parts, but by accessing and embodying Self Energy. From this place of deep presence, Self can witness, bring understanding, and foster integration, allowing our inner world to move toward harmony and wholeness.
In IFS, the parts of us are not seen as problematic or broken but as carrying important roles and intentions, even when those roles might create internal or external conflict. For example, one part may work to protect us from pain by keeping us distant in relationships, while another part may hold the vulnerability of past wounds. These parts, when acknowledged and understood, reveal pathways to profound healing.
IFS is particularly powerful in addressing relational and attachment (complex) trauma. Trauma often disrupts our connection to Self and fragments our internal system, leaving us feeling stuck in cycles of shame, fear, or disconnection. By fostering a compassionate relationship with all parts—protectors, exiles, and others—IFS helps restore balance and offers new possibilities for inner harmony and growth.
This approach is non-pathologizing and client-led. IFS honors your lived experience and empowers you to explore your inner world at a pace that feels safe and authentic. With the support of a therapist, the process helps you rediscover the wisdom and resilience inherent in your system and fosters a deeper connection to your own Self-energy.
IFS is more than a therapeutic model; it is a framework for self-discovery, connection, and transformation. Whether you’re new to therapy or seeking an approach that aligns with your values of compassion and wholeness, IFS provides an opportunity to engage with your inner world in a way that is healing, empowering, and deeply attuned.
